Challenge: Faculty burnout is no longer just about time.
It’s the pressure of large classes, constant grading, and trying to support every student—often all at once.
The human moment
LaToya described what burnout actually feels like behind the scenes.
It’s not just the volume of work; it’s the expectation to constantly show up for students while managing everything else.
As she put it:
“Many of my faculty colleagues always talk about how exhausted they are with trying to be all things to everyone… It can be exhausting.”
She also pointed out that even support can become overwhelming: extra training, new tools, and added responsibilities all landing on already full plates.
The proof
- Emotional fatigue is as real as time constraints
- Grading and feedback create constant pressure
- “Helpful” tools can become additional burdens
- Burnout builds when everything feels urgent
- Burnout isn’t just about workload—it’s about capacity
- More tools don’t solve the problem if they add friction
- Faculty need relief, not more to manage
- Faculty: Reduce overload by simplifying workflows
- Instructional Design: Create consistency across courses.
- Student Success: Free up time for meaningful feedback
- Online Programs: Focus on reducing friction, not adding more.
